The Nigerian federal government has been asked to speed up the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy as agreed by parties at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and also pursue the full implementation of the provisions of Nigeria’s climate change act 2021.
The call was made by Climate Change activists at a forum put together by Climate and sustainable Development Network (CSDevNet) in Abuja on Wednesday to unbundle COP28 Outcomes.
Organisers of the event say the whole idea is to analyse the outcomes of COP28, the implications for Nigeria and how the civil society groups can cascade the implemention at the grassroot level.
Some ground breaking resolutions were reached at the COP including the need for parties to move from fossil fuel and the operationalization of the loss and damage fund established at COP 27 in Sharm el Sheik Egypt.
Over 700million dollars has already been committed to the loss and damage fund by some developed countries, a development some of the climate change activists say is still a far cry from the amount needed by vulnerable communities in Africa to deal with the devastating impact of climate change.
Some of the experts at the event noted that it’s time for Nigeria to leverage on the outcome of the COP and redouble efforts at
enhancing farmers adaptation to climate resilient mechanism, a critical factor to food security and national development.
