The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has refuted reports of an explosion at the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) in Rivers State, a story that has gained prominence on most social media platforms in the last hours.

The company in a press release while acknowledging a fire incident in one of it’s infrastructures in rivers state on Wednesday however noted that what occurred was a flare incident, which has since been fully contained.

“There is no danger or health hazard to staff, the surrounding communities, or the environment” the press statement stated.

NNPC Ltd. urges the media and the public to disregard any reports suggesting an explosion at the refinery, as they are entirely false.

The press statement became necessary in the light of growing tension in the oil producing State which has witnessed two pipeline explosions in the last 24 hours following political disagreements between former governor of the state Nyesom wike and incumbent governor Sim fubara who has now been removed by a declaration of state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu to forestall further tension that could potentially expose national critical infrastructures in the state to danger.
