Electricity consumers on Band A in Enugu State will from august 1st, 2025 will begin to enjoy a reduction in their electricity tariff, as the rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh) drops from N209 to N160.

The adjustment comes after a review by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission, EERC, which issued a fresh tariff order to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited; the new utility company overseeing power distribution in the state, replacing the former Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC

In the newly issued directive titled Order No. EERC/2025/003, the Commission emphasized that the reviewed tariff is cost-reflective, factoring in the ongoing federal subsidy on power generation.

EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, explained that the reduction was reached after an extensive review of MainPower’s licence and tariff applications, using the Commission’s 2024 Tariff Methodology and Distribution Tariff Model.

He revealed that the average true cost of electricity in the state currently stands at N94, due in part to a federal subsidy which covers a significant portion of generation costs.

According to Okonkwo, while Band A consumers will now pay N160 per kWh, the tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E remain frozen.

He stressed that the new Band A rate helps cushion potential shock for both the utility and customers.

However, he warned that if the federal subsidy is eventually withdrawn, the tariff may have to be reviewed again to reflect the actual cost of electricity production and supply.

He added that to ensure fairness and accountability, the Commission has introduced strict monitoring guidelines, mandating MainPower to now publish, on a daily basis, a rolling seven-day average of power supply across all Band A feeders.

“Where MainPower fails to deliver on the committed level of service on Band A feeder for two consecutive days, MainPower shall report this to the Commission within 24 hours.

“Where MainPower fails to meet the committed service level to a Band A feeder for seven consecutive days, the feeder shall be automatically downgraded to the recorded level of supply”, Okonkwo noted.
