The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has conducted a capacity-building session for the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) to strengthen its customer complaint redress and dispute resolution processes in line with evolving electricity market reforms.
The KERC delegation, led by its Vice Chairman, Engr. Michael Enema Meliga, visited NERC Headquarters for a technical engagement on Monday, 3rd August 2026.
The engagement focused on enhancing the Commission’s capacity to effectively manage customer complaints and appeals in the state’s electricity market.
The Head of NERC International Relations and Stakeholder Secretariat, Mrs. Regina Osuagwu, reaffirmed NERC’s commitment to supporting State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) through knowledge sharing and capacity development.
“The Commission remains open to strengthening the institutional capacity of all state regulators and encourages continuous collaboration and active engagement among the commissions” she said
Highlights of the capacity building session include:
• Customer Complaint Redress Framework: Overview of customer service standards and complaint handling procedures under the Customer Protection Regulations 2023.
• Administration of Appeals: Guidance on the appeals process for unresolved customer complaints or cases where customers are dissatisfied with Distribution Company decisions.
• Dispute Resolution in NESI: Insights into the legal and regulatory mechanisms for resolving disputes across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The capacity-building programme according to the regulatory body forms part of NERC’s continued support for State Electricity Regulatory Commissions as they assume greater responsibilities under Nigeria’s decentralised electricity market, while promoting regulatory consistency and improved consumer protection across the country.
