The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed sanctions on eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for failing to comply with monthly energy caps for unmetered customers between July and September 2024.
A statement issued by the Commission, included the following DISCOS, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola as the affected sanctioned electricity distribution companies.
The DISCOS according to nerc were fined a total of N628,031,583.94, equivalent to 5% of the naira value of the gross overbilling for the period under review.
The commission also directed the DisCos to issue credit adjustments to all affected customers by May 15, 2025.
The Commission further noted that the review of the DisCos’ billing practices revealed widespread non-compliance with the monthly energy caps.
The sanctions are expected to provide relief to affected customers across the country who have been overbilled before now.
