In a bid to curb the rising cases of accidents involving fuel tankers, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has announced a major crackdown on trucks carrying excessive fuel volumes.
Beginning March 1st 2025 , trucks carrying more than 60,000 liters of fuel will no longer be allowed to load at loading depots across the country.
This new regulation announced on Wednesday at a News Conference aims to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure safer transportation of petroleum products.
Furthermore, the NMDPRA also announced plans to extend this regulation to trucks carrying 45,000 liters by the fourth quarter (Q4) of this year.
This phased approach the regulator says is designed to give operators time to adjust to the new regulations and ensure a smooth transition.
The NMDPRA’s decision comes amid growing concerns over the alarming rate of tanker accidents, which have resulted in loss of lives and property.
By limiting the capacity of fuel tankers, the authority hopes to mitigate this risk and promote a safer environment for road users.
The NMDPRA assured that it will closely monitor the implementation of this new regulation to ensure its effectiveness in reducing accidents involving fuel tankers.
