Minister Of Power Speaks On Power Sector Reforms At Nigeria Energy Forum In Lagos.

Minister of power adebayo adelabu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to repositioning the nation’s power sector for improved service delivery.

The minister in his remarks at the commencement of the 2025 Nigeria energy forum in lagos said the federal government is pursuing a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach to repositioning the nation’s power sector for sustainability, efficiency, and growth.

This approach according to the minister spans critical pillars which include legislation, policy reforms, infrastructure development, energy transition, including access to expansion, amongst other areas focused on addressing structural challenges, unlock private capital, and enhance service delivery across the electricity value chain.

The minister while speaking on the new electricity act passed in 2023 said the legislation remains a major milestone which provides a robust governance and regulatory framework for the Nigerian electricity supply industry(NESI). “The act devolves regulatory powers to the states, enables subnational markets, promotes competition, and empowers private participation across the value chain” the minister declared.

Adelabu further noted that the ministry has developed the integrated national electricity policy, which was approved by the federal executive council in february a policy he noted was designed to harmonize existing policies and provide a coherent roadmap for sustainable sector growth. While speaking on sector commercialisation, the minister disclosed that government is already deepening power sector commercialisation to strengthen revenue, liquidity, and investor confidence. “Through tarrif policy reforms which enabled cost-reflective tariffs for selected consumers, supply reliability has improved” he said

The nation’s minister of power who also touched on infrastructure development further noted that the current administration under president bola tinubu has introduced targetted national programs aimed at accelerating the viability, expansion, and modernisation of the national grid.”Under the phase zero of the presidential power initiative, we enhanced transmission capacity, grid stability, with over 700MW of additional transmission capacity already achieved”

Adelabu in his speech, also said that this year’s theme, “powering Nigeria through Investment, innovation, and partnership” captures the essence of Nigeria’s aspiration to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable energy future for the country.
